History/Overview
In 2020, Mercedes-Benz launched the GLB as its latest subcompact crossover model. Positioned one step up from the GLA, the GLB is a more practical entry-level choice as one of today’s smallest vehicles to offer three-row seating.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
There are no changes to the GLB for the 2022 model year.
Available Trims
Benz offers an entry-level GLB 250, and a sportier AMG GLB 35 variant. Both are powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed transmission, and AWD, but the GLB 35 gets nearly a third more horsepower.
Standard Features
On the outside, the GLB 250 has 18-inch wheels, LED headlights/taillights, rain-sensing wipers with heated washers, and a panoramic roof. Inside, you get heated front seats with power driver adjustments, automatic A/C, 7.0-inch driver and infotainment displays, and multiple USB-C phone charging ports.
The GLB’s standard safety features are forward collision mitigation, crosswind assist, and attention assist.
AMG GLB 35 models get 19-inch wheels, a sport suspension with three-stage damping, power-folding side mirrors, auto-dimming driver’s side/rearview mirrors, 10.25-inch driver and infotainment screens, and ambient lighting.
Key Options
A premium package adds the 10.25-inch displays and auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors (GLB 250 only), park assist (AMG GLB 35 only), a power passenger seat, blind spot assist, vehicle exit warning, passive keyless entry, ambient lighting, and smartphone integration.
An advanced driver assistance suite brings active/evasive steering assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping/lane change assist, and enhanced stop-and-go.
Both models offer navigation, a head-up display, and 360-degree cameras as stand-alone options, while the GLB 250’s list also includes park assist.
Finally, AMG GLB 35 offers a driver’s package with a Nappa steering wheel, AMG drivetrain tweaks, and 20-inch wheels.
Fuel Economy
Mercedes-Benz’s fuel consumption estimates are 10.9/7.9 L/100 km (city/highway) for the GLB 250, and 12.7/9.4 L/100 km in the AMG GLB 35.
Competition
The GLB’s most direct competition comes from the Land Rover Discovery Sport, another small luxury SUV offering three rows of seats. The VW Tiguan competes on the seven-seat criteria, but is less luxurious. If you don’t need a third row, consider the Lexus UX, Audi Q3, BMW X1, Volvo XC40 and Cadillac XT4 as GLB alternatives.
