We are always working to make BuySell.com an even better way to buy or sell your stuff!
Here are some recent enhancements we have made to the site:

You can search for items on BuySell.com even when you're not on the site with our E-mail Search Alert (New). Simply fill out your search criteria, and choose "Add Search Alert". The only information you need to provide is your e-mail address.

You will then receive a confirmation e-mail advising that your Search Alert needs to be activated. Click on the link to activate you alert and then all items matching your search criteria will start coming to your Inbox each day, automatically! Create as many search alerts as you want & you can always add, change or delete your search alert anytime

 

When you enter search criteria and search results are returned, the default view is "List view" (i.e. you see a list of all the items that meet your search criteria). However, you do have the option to also view only ads with photos all in one page – this is the Gallery View.

To select Gallery view, within the Search Results page, click on the right hand corner to change from "List view" to "Gallery View".

 

Under the Vehicle category...

Priority Placement is a paid ad enhancement that places your ad amongst the first 7 items listed in the search results for items in the same category as your ad.

A Priority Placement ensures that your ad is always towards the top of the Search Results without any need to refresh or repost your ad. You can upgrade to a Priority Placement for as little as $20 for one week.

Adding a video to your ad is a quick 2 step process:

1) Record and save your video to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/)
2) Copy the code from the Embeddable Player box info and paste where it says "Paste code from YouTube".

When searching through ads with photos you have various options for viewing the photos with BuySell.com's Multi-photo Flash viewer (New). When you click on an ad with a photo you will have the option to click on individual photos or have the photos presented as a slideshow. You can also increase the size of the photos by clicking on "Full Screen."

 

 

Once you have activated your ad on BuySell.com you'll want to share it with as many potential buyers as possible. You can E-mail it to Friends, (New!) you can create For Sale posters, and (New!) you can share your ad on any social networking sites you belong to like Facebook and MySpace. Note: you must have an existing account on the site you wish to post to.

When you receive the confirmation page that your ad has been published, simply click on the link to the site you would like to place your ad on. You will be required to sign in to your account on the site in order to you're your ad.

Once you have activated your ad on BuySell.com you will be taken to the confirmation page which says "Congratulations! Your ad is now published on BuySell.com". On this page you are given the option to e-mail your ad to friends and family.

Simply click on the link that says "Click here to receive an Email Flyer" and enter in your e-mail address. A PDF flyer with all of the information in your ad and a photo (if applicable) will be sent to you so you can forward to friends & family.

Once you have activated your ad on BuySell.com you will receive a confirmation e-mail that includes 2 PDF versions of your ad that you can print off and post on bulletin boards at work, at the supermarket, the Laundromat, and anywhere around town where you want to promote your ad. You will receive one version with tear off phone numbers/e-mail addresses and one version without.

Searching for ads

There are various ways you can look for ads on BuySell.com:

At the top of each page is a "Search" field where you can enter your search criteria and/or narrow down your search by category

On the Home page:
  • Under the Vehicle category, is an "Advanced Search for Vehicles" button (New) which allows you to search for a vehicle by make, model, year, keyword, price or a combination as well as search for only those ads with photos
  • By clicking on any of the "Popular Searches" (New) categories

On the Search tab you can use:
  • Advanced search - search by price, keyword, location or a combination of all plus ads with photos
  • Advanced Vehicle search
  • A-Z search - browse classifications alphabetically
  • Dealers - search for items from a particular commercial advertiser


You can enter as much information on the ad (i.e. ad title, contact information) into the Search field.

To save a search you must be a registered My BuySell user. You can also save ads that you want to track. It is a simple process to sign up to become a user. Click here more info.

However, you don't have to be a registered user to create an E-mail Search Alert that will deliver new items that meet your search criteria to your Inbox automatically.

You can look for ads with photos through the Advanced Search tool (available on the Home Page and on the "Search" page).

You can also use the Gallery View (New) to narrow your search results to only those ads with pictures.

To select Gallery view, within the Search Results page, click on the right hand corner to change from "List view" to "Gallery View"

Responding to ads

Each ad will contain a phone number and/or e-mail address so you can contact the seller directly about the item you are interested in.

It is strongly recommended that you meet a seller face to face to conduct the sale. Click here to read BuySell.com's tips on avoiding fraud.

If you think an ad contains fraud or inaccurate information or you think it is miscategorized you can report the ad to BuySell.com by clicking on the “Report Abuse” link found at the bottom of all ads.

Click on the "Place Ad" tab which is found at the top of all pages on BuySell.com OR you can click on the "Place a Free Ad" button on the Home Page of BuySell.com

Placing and add on BuySell.com is a simple 4 step process:

  1. Select Classification - Where do you want your ad to appear?
    • Choose the category on BuySell.com where you would like your ad to appear
  2. Create Your Ad - What do you want to include in your ad posting?
    • Include your asking price, a description of your item and a title of your ad
    • You are required to provide your phone number, e-mail & postal code but you choose which contact information you would like to include in your ad
    • Do you want to add a photo? You can include as many photos as you'd like to your ad (under 4MB each, in .jpg format)
    • Do you want to make your ad really stand out? Check out our ad upgrades like Priority Placement & Spotlight ads
    • Do you want more people to see your item? Look into our options for placing your ad into print
  3. Preview & Publish Your Ad - Does your ad look the way you want?
    • Preview your ad to make sure it looks the way you want
    • If you have chosen a paid ad enhancement then you will be directed to BuySell.com's secure payment site
  4. Confirmation - The last step & your ad is published!
    • Check your Inbox for an e-mail from BuySell.com and follow the instructions to activate your ad
    • You will receive a final confirmation e-mail once your ad is activated that includes information on how to make changes to your ad

No, but there are advantages to becoming a registered BuySell.com user:

  1. You will be able to view all your current ads in one place (via My BuySell)
  2. You will be able to easily add, edit and delete ads
  3. You can save ads & search results
  4. It saves you time when placing ads as you don't need to re-enter all your information every time you place an ad

You need to activate your ad in order for it to appear online. After creating your ad on BuySell.com you will receive an e-mail asking you to activate your ad. Once you have successfully activated your ad on BuySell.com you will receive a final e-mail confirming that your ad is activated.

Make sure you keep this confirmation e-mail as it includes the link to change or renew your ad.

If you haven't received the activation e-mail from BuySell.com check your Junk Mail/Spam folder. To ensure that you receive our emails properly, you can enter postmaster@buysell.com into your address/contact book and this should ensure that our emails do arrive to your inbox and not the junk/spam folder.

If you can't activate the ad by clicking the link or copying the link, the problem may be that the link is not displaying as one line so it is not clickable or copy and paste correctly (see example below)

You will need to do this in two steps: Copy and paste the first line into your web browsers address bar and then go back and copy the second line and paste it right next to the first line you pasted and click enter on your keyboard.

When successfully copied & pasted, the web site should open and will say "Congratulations, your ad is now online!"

The confirmation e-mail from BuySell.com includes a link on how to change your ad. However, if you have created an account with BuySell.com you can edit any of your ads currently on BuySell.com through your account

The confirmation e-mail (this is the e-mail you receive confirming that your ad is live on BuySell.com) includes a link on how to renew your ad

if you have created an account with BuySell.com you can renew any of your ads currently on BuySell.com through your account

This can happen if you are a registered MyBuySell user & placed the ad when you were not logged in. Try logging out of your account and then click on the link again

If you placed the ad when you were logged in with a registered user, you can edit your ad by clicking on My BuySell.

If you are not a registered user contact Customer Service so they can assist you with editing/deleting/renewing your ad.

When you enter the km's in the km field, make sure you do not use any spaces or commas in the km's. For example, if the km's for your vehicle is 189,000, enter it exactly like this: 189000

When you type your postal code, make sure you type it without using any spaces or dashes. Also, if you have a zero in your postal code, ensure you are typing a "0" for the zero and not the letter "O".
Correct Example: V0X1M2
Incorrect Example: VOX 1M2

This is normally a cookie issue. A cookie is a small amount of data sent to your browser and stored on your computer's hard drive. BuySell.com uses cookies to enhance your experience on the site & they ensure that you do not have to go back and re-enter your region every time you visit the site, however, if your Internet browser is not set up to accept cookies this could result in you having to choose your region every time. Check your browser security settings to ensure that it is set up to accept cookies from BuySell.com.

If you are having trouble changing the region setting then you may need to clear the cookies that are stored on your computer. Please note that if you clear all the cookies from your computer it may impact your experience on other sites.

When creating your ad you can upload as many pictures as you'd like (up to 4MB each in .jpg format). These pictures will be available to anyone who clicks on your ad in the Search Results list view or Gallery view.

Simply browse your files to find the photo you would like to upload, and click on "Upload" to add the photo to your ad. Repeat this process until you have added all your photos.

If you include multiple photos, your photos will be presented as a slideshow to those viewing your ads via BuySell.com's Multiphoto Flash Viewer. Including a photo also means that your ad will be included when someone searches for "ads with photos" or uses the Gallery View in Search results. A photo with your ad means more opportunities for potential buyers to see your item!

All photos must be in jpg format only and no larger then 4MB in size. To check the size and format of your photo, right click on it and then choose properties. You will be able to view the "type of file" and also the size.

Priority Placement is a paid ad enhancement that places your ad amongst the first 7 items listed in the search results for items in the same category as your ad.

A Priority Placement ensures that your ad is always towards the top of the Search Results without any need to refresh or repost your ad. You can upgrade to a Priority Placement for as little as $20 for two weeks.

A Spotlight ad is a paid ad enhancement that puts your ad on the “Browse Categories” page (so it appears before the “Search Results” page).

A Spotlight ad helps increase the exposure of your ad to people who are looking for items like yours on BuySell.com. You can upgrade to a Spotlight ad starting from $4.99 for one week.

During the ad placement process you will have the opportunity to choose to put your online ad into print, which will increase exposure of your ad. Online & print packages are available by clicking on the "Place Ads" tab and then choosing the left hand option - "Print & Online Ad".

  • Print & Online ad packages are not available in Saskatchewan

BuySell.com uses VeriSign Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology so that ll credit card data transmitted to our network servers is in a secure encrypted mode We also ask for a credit card verification number which provides an additional layer of security. The verification number is the last 3 numbers printed on the signature panel on the back of a Visa or MasterCard. For American Express, it is the 4 digit number on the front of your card.

We ask for it as an extra security precaution against card misuse. As the number only appears on the card (and not on receipts or statements), it helps prevent fraud.

My BuySell is a separate section of the site for registered users that makes it even easier to use the site. AS a registered user you can:

  • Place ads more quickly
  • Edit/Renew/Delete your ads all in one place
  • Save specific ads with your notes
  • E-mail ads to your friends
  • Save search results
  • Create search alerts

Registering is a quick and easy process! You can register on the Home Page or by going to the My BuySell page and filling out the information.

In your My BuySell account, under "My BuySell Tools", choose "Change Password"

In your My BuySell account, under "My BuySell Tools", choose "Edit My Account" and update your information.

When you are viewing an ad, simply click on the link in the ad called "Save Ad" and it will be saved to your clipboard in your My BuySell account. Within your account you can add notes, Note: you must be a registered user and be signed in to save an ad. If you are not signed in, you will be prompted to do so when you try to save an ad. When entering your search criteria on the "Search" page there is a field called "Save Search As" which allows you to save the search criteria so you do not have to re-enter it every time you visit the site. Your saved searches are listed on the "Search" page and under "My Saved Searches" on your My BuySell account page. Note: you must be a registered user and be signed in to save a search. In the "Login" section of the "My BuySell" page is a link called "Forgot Password?" Click on this link and follow the instructions. You can use either you the e-mail address you registered with or your username to retrieve your password.

While we do review ads placed on BuySell.com for content, and will remove any that do not meet our editorial standards, the transactions on BuySell.com are strictly between buyer and sellers, and we are not able to catch all scams or fraudulent offers.

If you see an ad that falls into one of the following categories:

  • Ads selling illegal, prohibited, or suspect items
  • Ads which do not accurately represent what is being sold
  • Sellers who ask you to send money outside the US or Canada (Western Union, BidPay, etc)
  • Buyers who ask you to ship outside the US or Canada
  • Sellers/Buyers who you believe are acting suspiciously or unprofessionally other suspicious activity

Please report the ad to BuySell.com by clicking on the "Report Abuse" link found at the bottom of all ads. We will investigate the ad and remove it if necessary.

Some examples of previous fraudulent ads/responses are below:

  1. Distant buyer offers a high-value (but fake) cashier's cheque in exchange for your item
    • You receive an odd email offering to buy your item site unseen.
    • Cashier's cheque is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or just about anything else.
    • Value of cashier's cheque often far exceeds your item - buyer asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
    • Banks will often cash these fake cheques AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE cheque FAILS TO CLEAR
    • Scam often involves a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate owing buyer money, etc)
  2. Distant seller requests payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:
    • Seller often claims that an MTCN or confirmation code is needed before he can withdraw your money - this is FALSE, once you've wired money, it is GONE.
    • Common items currently: laptops, plasma TVs, cell phones, tickets - but could be almost anything
    • Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, Ukraine, Spain, UK, Italy, Netherlands - but could be anywhere
    • Deal often seems too good to be true
  3. Distant seller offers to send you a cashier's cheque and then have you wire money:
    • This is ALWAYS a scam, in our experience - the cashier's cheque is FAKE
    • Sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not
    • Scammer often asks for your name, address, etc for printing on the fake cheque
    • Deal often seems too good to be true
  4. Distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service.
    • Most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT, operated by scammers
    • For more info, do a Google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud"
    • If you must do business with a distant seller, insist on a legitimate service, such as www.escrow.com
  5. Distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which he will ship goods
