2013 Nissan Xterra

Trim: S

Great offroader
Comfortable and roomy ride, great handling offroad, not too bad on regular roads but maybe the suspension is a little bouncy at high speeds. The trunk space is smaller than CR-V (my last car) but its totally functional. Overall great truck and I know I am not comparing apples with apples, but a little heavier on the gas vs the CR-V.

2013 Honda Pilot

Trim: EXL-RES
by allenwales on 05-06-2013
I love this truck
Having compromised with a Honda CR-V EX-L for the last 3 years I was so happy to make the shift up to the Pilot. The ride quality and space are awesome, the fuel economy is about 1-2l/100km worse than the CR-V but on the motorway it does 10l/100km without any effort at 110km/hr. The kids love the Rear Entertainment System and although it has a cost for this option I now think it was totally worth it vs using portable DVD/iPad players. The 2013 Pilot is a solid truck, great family vehicle and has the standard Honda benefits of high residual and reliability. I love my Honda Pilot !

2013 Ford Explorer

Little on the big side but great on the gas
I thought this truck would be bad on the gas consumption but its better than my 2010 Honda CR-V. Its a big big truck, very comfortable ride, lots of space and great on the gas so far....

1993 Honda Civic

Trim: Hatchback
by allenwales on 10-18-2012
Great runaround
We bought this car from a friend for a bargain price and kept it for about 1 year as our 3rd car for visitors arriving from out of town. It was an old car when we got it but it didn't require any maintenance and we sold it for more than we paid, gotta love those Honda residual prices.

2003 Mazda Miata MX-5

Trim: Convertible

This is the car that invented Zoom Zoom
I leased this car for my wife as her birthday present and she loved it. It was so sporty and fast, driving with the top down was a beautiful way to experience the mountains on the drive to work in Vancouver. There wasn't a lot of space for a big guy and the interior was not the refined version that you see on the Mazda showroom floor in latest versions. Overall we fondly remember a fun car to drive that just stuck to the road and put the wind in your hair.

2005 Audi A4

Trim: 2.0i
by allenwales on 10-11-2012
My second Audi A4 - I love this design
The A4 is a classic car design for me. I loved the speed, comfort, luxury, had no real issues on reliability in the 4yrs I owned this car. The only complaints were minor, very little legroom in the rear, first gear in automatic often felt jump out of sport mode for me. The interior of Audi's is second to none in same class I think, this car really was a pleasure to drive to work every morning.

1982 Porsche 911

Trim: SC
by allenwales on 10-11-2012
There is no substitute
This is a classic design 911 SC from the 80's, beautiful in chiffon white and very very sporty. Its air cooled engine and all the mods have been done as per expert recommendations to prevent known problems. I use this as our 3rd car - just for fun at the weekends - my 3yr old son just loves riding in it. The acceleration is great, the transmission is stick (old school) the space inside is great in the front row, now so much legroom in the back but what do you expect from a racing car design. I love the design, it makes me smile to see this sat in our garage and for the first time in my life I want to think about maintaining a car. On Sundays we unleash the beast, so guess I am riding my luck and counting the days to my first run in with the RCMP.

2009 Mazda Mazda5

Trim: Sport - Leather
by allenwales on 10-11-2012
This is an excellent mini minivan, can't beat the 6 seats
My wife loves this car, she was adamant she was not getting a minivan when we had our kids but she absolutely loves the Mazda5. I call it our mini minivan. The 6 seats are the amazing thing about this vehicle, so useful when we have grandparents or visitors staying over or friend's kids to take out. The performance is really perky and fast out of the gates if you need it. We have owned this car for 3 years so far and it came highly recommended from a friend. We can see why. Reliability is good so far in first 3 yrs, the interior is leather but some finishes feel a little cheap - its not really a luxury class car. Where it excels is for the kids. They can get in and out of the captains chairs and the sliding doors make a huge difference. I would like to upgrade to a Honda Pilot or BMW X5 but literally my wife wont let me, she just loves this car. I would recommend you consider the Mazda5 over say a Sienna or Odyssey, its cheaper, faster and has just as much interior space (maybe a little less legroom in 3rd row). Overall this has been a clear winner for the wife and kids, go test drive one and you will see why they like it so much.

1999 Jeep Cherokee

Trim: Sport
by allenwales on 10-11-2012
My first car in Canada
Jeep Cherokee is a classic 4x4 off road vehicle and just what I wanted when starting to explore British Columbia's back roads. I purchased this 1999 Cherokee when it was 3yrs old - just back off a lease, and it was 12yrs old when I disposed of it. I really loved the trunk space, it was great for my black Labrador dog. The exterior design was a classic for me but performance was a bit sluggish then again it was 4x4 so I can't complain too much. I loved and cared for this vehicle for 9 years but in the end was glad to trade it in for a new car. I miss those off road adventures but not so much the poor fuel economy and repair bills. Every time I see a black Cherokee on the road I have to stare to see if its my old Jeep, that's how fondly I think of it even a few years later. I think this SUV would be a great addition if you are looking for something cheap that's also 4x4

2010 Honda CR-V

Trim: EX-L
by allenwales on 10-11-2012
Can't go wrong with a Honda
I have owned an EX-L trim CR-V for 2 years now and have to say its simply a great family car. The interior space is fantastic, especially the legroom in the rear seats. Performance is not a sports SUV but it does the job I need it to. Fuel economy is fine its on par with Ford Explorer, the real benefit of owning a Honda is the high residuals (low depreciation) and reliability which is critical when you have 2 young kids. My brakes needed replacing after 2yrs which is expected but no other maintenance was required other than changing oil. I would highly recommend the CR-V if you are looking for a family class SUV, its one of the best in its class.
