2013 Honda Accord

Trim: LX
by MartinV on 11-27-2012
Good Car overall
Performance
Could have been more responsive to the throttle, it reads 180-190 hp in the brochure but does not feel it when pushed.
However when it not pushed to the max you get what you expect. City driving is great, merges to the highway lack a sense of urgency.

Transmission
This is the first Accord with a CVT, its a good thing if Honda did it right, as with all new features we wont know if it works long term unless we wait a while.
The CVT will help keep the driving experience smooth and jerk free since there are no gear shifts.

Interiors
Feel above average. The entry level trim Camry appears less refined than the Accord.

Overall
This car does not disappoint. Does the commute well.
The 2013 Accord should be a good investment, especially since its the release of a newer model.

2012 Suzuki SX4

Trim: Manual
by MartinV on 11-14-2012
Did some of the horses run out of the barn?
The vehicles claims to have 200 horse power from its 2l 4 cylinder engine. That sound like a good thing, until you actually drive it. When trying to reasonably push it to test the vehicle, the feeling of acceleration is disappointing.
I drive a mid sized family sedan, its several hundred kilos heavier, has an auto transmission and rates it maximum engine output at 150 hp approx. However that has better acceleration.

What should have helped the SX4 I drove was that it had a manual transmission, its power transfer efficiency advantage should have made this faster than an automatic.

Excluding the engine, the car overall is average at best.

Suzuki is stepping out of the US market, this car helps us understand why.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle

Trim: Turbo
by MartinV on 11-13-2012
Refined and energetic
The turbo beetle can be viewed as a normal beetle that has a bit more punch in it.
It has a responsive throttle that does not disappoint for a car in this category. Nothing extraordinary overall, just above average performance which is appreciated.
The turbo is not going to make this the equivalent of your tuned Supra, the turbo spool whistle and waste valve noises are barely noticeable which is a good or bad thing depending on what you want.

The car driven was equipped with a Dual Clutch gearbox (DSG). This is like an automatically shifted manual gear box, it operates to the user in the same way a normal automatic would but this should be more fuel efficient. Once noticeable trait is that it delivers a slightly different response in stop and go situations since when you get back on the throttle it gets back a *BIT* too aggressively on the power delivery (watch for it before you buy). Its a small thing that can be easily managed/overcome. On the plus side gear shifts are quick (faster than the average manual shift).

The car lacks automatic headlight controls. Not being your average car (in expectation and in price), I would expect that is something that comes as a standard feature.

The short wheel base is appreciated, turns are easy.

Overall a refined ride that gets a bit peppy when you want it.

Quality Interiors
Performance is what you expect.

Handing is stiffer than the usual SUV, this equates to better handling.

The interiors reflect quality. Its the modern Cadillac trim.

Overall this is an Cadillac Compact SUV, you get the modern Cadillac interiors, other than that its the average vehicle.

2012 Cadillac Escalade

by MartinV on 10-19-2012
Bling!
It has above average performance figures for its class.

The interiors are appealing, appears to be a higher quality finish.

The exterior on its own is pretty standard that that would be an inaccurate assessment. This has a special appeal just on its own. I would not call it iconic but its partially true.

This car has a reputation that can be described by the words hip or fashionable. You cannot compare this as a regular SUV. This makes it a vehicle that can be purchased and make it worth accessorizing to make it even more Bling!

2012 Chevrolet Cruze

by MartinV on 10-19-2012
Average. Interesting turbo option
-Performance: Interesting turbo option.
The 1.4l comes with a turbo option. Its intention is not to turn it into a street racing car because its performance remains average but its for fuel savings. I don't think this is such a great idea since the turbo puts extra stress on the engine than a naturally aspirated 1.4l (even though its boost is very mild). Also the turbo trim increases the vehicle cost by nearly 20%-25% (as far as I know at that time). That is not really worth it IMO.

-Interior Space:
Its a small car so you get what you expect from this category.

-Overall: This is a no frills car. In its new state (2012 model) it works. Pricing leaves more to be desired for, I would personally compare this to a Corolla and pick that over this.

2006 Toyota Matrix

Trim: Base Manual
by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Average as a car, I expect more from Toyota
Performance
-Nothing that stands out, the standard transmission helps.
-AWD option makes it a competitor/alternative for the Impeza but be ready to pay for the AWD. Its not in the Corolla price bracket.

Interiors
-Feels cheap, the dark grey plastic is not pleasant in this car, while its not the worst I have seen better in other Toyotas.
-Overall did not feel like Toyota quality, the interiors do not exceed the quality found in a Yaris.

Maybe its just this car, but I feel this is a (bit of a) let down from Toyota. On the other hand the car will get the job done and overall is at least average in its category. Unless you want AWD, consider a Corolla instead.

2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Trim: E240
by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Good mid range luxury vehicle
Performance
-Average acceleration for a car in this range, does what you expect.
-Maybe the feel of average acceleration is because the car keeps you sheltered from whats going on outside. Its comfortable to the extent that you cant feel that you are pulling up in speed.
-This is not a slow car.

Interiors
-Good, what you would expect in this class, does not disappoint.
-Contemporary, elegant and refined.

Comfort
-Further to note in the performance section, this is smooth ride.
-The handling is good, not stiff neither floaty.

Overall a good car if you don't demand performance. You get everything expected for the commute with comfort standing out (as it should in this type of car). Again this is what you expect from this category of car and this car delivers.
Note: Higher engine configurations are available (and more popular than the 2.4l) should you need better performance.

2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Good for light loads / personal use
Performance
-The gas engine is great for light loads and no load based drives (i.e. you use this truck no because you want to haul heavy loads but as a personal preference).

Interiors
-Bit above average for a pickup truck

Exteriors
-Its not excessively large making it relatively more maneuverable in traffic if you wont be using all that space.

This is not a heavy duty pickup truck, this is great for personal use or any light loads.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro

Trim: LT Convertible
by MartinV on 10-17-2012
The Camaro is a legend to me, that is why V6 dissapoints
Performance
-The Camaro is an icon of a muscle car, that what lets me down since its a V6, the SS V8 trim is more like what should be the standard and the ZL1 is the ideal option. That's my opinion because of what I expect from this kind of vehicle.
-The V6 will lower your insurance and save on gas (compared to ZL1 and SS)

Exterior appearance
-The car is a head turner, no matter what is under the hood. It will shout when floored and people will look even when you are going slow. Its looks out there and people will notice you.

Interiors
-Looks and feels cheap
-The power steering might not even exist (I don't know for sure but it feels like you are doing all the work).

Many people will buy this car for different reasons, if:
You are performance oriented, look elsewhere.
You want an iconic symbol and performance is not important, this is good since it will keep head turning while you don't shell out that much more for insurance and gas.

2012 GMC Sierra 2500 Pickup

Trim: Sierra 2500 HD package with Diesel Engine
by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Buy the Diesel only if you are hauling heavy loads
I have driven a 1500 (gas) truck, that is a great buy if you just want a truck for casual (non-commercial) use.

The Diesel option delivers a lot of torque and that will be great for commercial use (and fuel expenses), however the acceleration will suffer when you do not have a load at the back (relative to the gas engine).

Interiors are not extraordinary but good (above average) for a truck.

2012 Toyota Camry

Trim: LE
by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Great if you want the basic requirements from a car
If you are looking to get a car to commute and want a reliable and comfortable ride that does not break the bank, this is the ride for you.

Performance
------------------
Its reasonably powered, nothing to impress. I own older models, they feel a bit more powerful, with that said the fuel economy had increased over my older Camrys so I guess that's a good trade off overall given the times. Again the performance has only dropped slightly.

Reliability
--------------
Its too new to tell, my bets are still on the Camry.

Handling
-------------
My older Camrys (06/07) are SE trims, the 07 is stiffer than the 06 (older shape than the 07). This Camry is an LE, however it still has a good composure in cornering which makes it almost similar to the SE models of the past. (I have not driven a 2012 SE to compare).

Interiors
------------
I liked the 06 Camry cabin's feel, it has a quality build. My 07 did not match up to that, this does not either (but the price tag is WAY lower! so its all good in my opinion). Rear leg room space did improve marginally (that is always welcome and a big factor in my opinion) and they did it without increasing the actual cabin volume.

Overall a great car. Looks like you cant go wrong. Especially at its current price, the decision is even easier.

2007 Toyota Camry

Trim: SE 4 cyl
by MartinV on 10-17-2012
This is a great car
Performance/Fun Factor
----------------------------------
-160 hp approx. its reasonably efficient (i.e. it sends out enough power) for a 2.4l - 4 Cylinder
-The engine noise is slightly more audible (at least in my car). This makes the drive more interesting but not annoying (in my experience).
-The power train setup works well, the shifts are smooth, the automatic is good overall. It learns when to shift based on your driving (eventually). Its a 5 speed automatic, a 6 speed auto would be better (newer models have that).

Reliability
--------------
-The 4cyl engine will burn oil, this is a common problem. With that said the solution (being tested out now) is to use Lucas Oil treatment and use 5W30 instead of 5W20 oil. This is the real let down on the car. Consider buying a 2009 if possible, that is deemed extremely reliable from some studies. NOTE: the car has 180k on the engine but I expect more in this aspect. Just watching/topping up the oil after a few thousand kms should keep things moving.
-Everything else is great, it just works, it almost makes up for the above issue.

Comfort
------------
-Interior space is satisfactory, it is comfortable with rear leg room.
-The A/C & Heat gets the job done.
-The seats are very supportive, both for the back and the bucket like design for cornering.
-On the downside the steering feels heavier than what I expect, manoeuvring through a building car park is a bit of a small workout but you get used to it (I drive a 2006 Camry as well and that has a really light steering).

Handling
-------------
-SE trim: Its stiff, but excellent, it really has sport handling (considering this is a family sedan) and its not just a spoiler on the back. Very impressive, stays flat in the corners.
-SE trim has 17" tires, (bit) expensive to replace but its good and has a low profile which helps handling even more.

2012 Buick Regal

Truly average
I have given these all three stars, I do feel that way even if I try to reconsider.

This car does have the usual expected power delivery, interior space, appearance. Its not going to impress but I don't find it disappointing either.

I dislike the price point (new), its does not feel cheap to drive and accordingly it is not cheap to own either.

Overall its average and average at best.

2012 Buick LaCrosse

by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Good but a bit pricey
I do not look at this as a luxury vehicle, with that approach I can:
-Evaluate this car as having a comfortable ride
-Above average features
-Decent handling
-Overall a good feeling, nothing stands out excessively but it does the day to day commute well.

I do like the car but the price tag hurts it. This is not worth its price when its new. I would rather pay a bit more and get a Lexus or save the difference and get a Toyota, but again, putting the cost aside I like the car.

2012 GMC Acadia

by MartinV on 10-17-2012
Average SUV, dont buy into the extra seats
This is an average vehicle, it does not have any thing lacking or excessive in its power delivery.

The boot space is reasonable, bigger than a compact SUV.

They do offer an option for rear seats, I do not find the rear row practical, its not fair to count them as seats.

Overall your average mid size SUV, as with all of them, do get in those rear row seats before you count them as the vehicle feature.

2001 Honda CR-V

Trim: base with AWD option
by MartinV on 10-16-2012
Reliable but has limited interior room
This is reliable, it went 150k+ with no powertrain issues.

The interior space is very limited. Its almost like buying a tall civic. Hate tha fact that your knees are pressed up to the plastic of the lower part of the dash (for the driver).
With that said, the seats fold down which is a plus.

It handles decently, no issues but nothing to brag about.

The AWD is good, once it kicks in you will struggle to find the power from its 2.0l 4 cylinder. Overall urban use suggests an power delivery.

This is a reasonably economic option if you want a SUV on a budget, also consider a RAV4 as well. Both these will keep you smiling as the kilometres pass by.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Trim: Base
by MartinV on 10-16-2012
Oldsmobile trying to be what its not
Oldsmobile traditionally made itself out to be a brand for larger automobiles that slush around with its 'simple' suspension.

Comfort reigned in those cars as pot holes were ironed out well at the expense of any decent form of handling.

Those cars catered to a specific need in the automotive industry but this car won't.

Trying to emerge itself as a sporty sedan this vehicle does not impress. It has a rather small interior for its class.
This makes it acceptable for 1-2 occupants but does not comfortably seat 4/5.

Average performance in the 4 cylinder option.

Reliability is a tad below the expected average. It does start to gives issues once you cross over 100k.

The handling is good, love how it sits close to the ground.

Not so great but its far from the worst of them.

2000 Ford Windstar

The interior space is impressive!
The Ford Windstar has a V6 engine that provides sufficient power for its large body.

The reliability is average, its better than your usual domestic vehicle.

2006 Dodge Charger

Trim: SXT
by MartinV on 10-16-2012
Using the V6 does not impress
The phrase Dodge Charger stirs up the feeling of fun & power, its something to aspire towards owning.

After driving a V6 model, I do feel some of the rumble and excitement that I was expecting but it does fall short.

The power is limited, you would expect more out of this, my 4 cylinder import does almost as well.
If I had a V8 it should be different but I don't.

A refined interior is something that is absent in this, the overly basic interior in this leaves me thinking that that my Camry felt more like a Lexus.
Maybe its just my preference for style but I don't think I'm alone on that one.

Overview
As with any 'muscle' car, don't skip on the power, if you are going to opt for a smaller engine you might as well skip on the car and get something else. Obviously the V8 costs more to own, to gas up and insure so be cautious and factor that in your budget since the cost of ownership goes beyond just buying this car.
This car was a legend to me, maybe that's why I am so critical.

2012 Cadillac CTS-V

by MartinV on 10-16-2012
Sale: 30% off the price of a BMW M5
Performance / Fun factor
-The car is fun to drive
-The performance is the higher end of what you get at this price point
-With that said the 400 hp V8 Camaro feels more fun to drive than this even with its 550+hp.
-That said its an acceleration monster. Get ready to feel the G force while its engine sings for you.

The Cadillac factor makes this more refined than a Camaro, however if that does not matter, stop looking at this and get the newer Camaro that has this engine.

The most interesting fact is that this has a similar horsepower rating to a BMW M5.
While its not German engineering, you have the opportunity to get similar performance results.

Cons
-(Some) parts of the Interior trim build quality are terrible! In my experience I have had the plastic handle components for the lever to tilt the seats forward come off more than once.
-Four seats? really? as with all cars in this category its just a suggestion and for occasional use. Expect this to seat two in its general use.

Buy a Camaro to have fun.
Buy a CTS-V for a better handling experience and a more refined driving feel.

2012 Chevrolet Orlando

by MartinV on 10-16-2012
Sacrifice on comfort and you can save money
Not everyone can afford a Toyota Sienna or a Honda Odyssey, those cars set the standard for what to aspire to in a minivan.

However for those who do not have the budget have a frugal option. This car has:
-A relatively smaller engine (but the Sienna has a similar one).
-A smaller body (gas savings)
-Might be good if the van aspect is needed but sparingly used (e.g. commute to work during the week and short week end trips).
-Better space than a 7 seater SUV

However the downside to this is that the interior space is really limited.
There is no way to put it but adult rear passengers will not be comfortable, this is my biggest issue.

Overall the affordability is the main factor in choosing this car, expect to get what you pay for it.
Avoid if discomfort really matters.

2012 Chevrolet Volt Electric

by MartinV on 10-16-2012
One step into the future
This is an interesting car. Something out of the ordinary.

The car is purely electrically powered, however you have the advantage of on on-board generator that gives you a (much) extended range. That is awesome!

You do save money when you evaluate fuel usage. However the vehicle does have a high cost, if your province has any credit for this vehicle it might lower it but its a steep price relative to what your getting.

One concern is the life of the battery. Just like laptop (or any rechargeable) battery does not last forever after hundreds/thousands of recharges, I don't expect the car will go on for very long. Do research the cost of replacing them, that counts towards your gas 'savings'.

Overall view: If you like trying new gadgets this is your car (or maybe the Nissan Leaf?), but do the math on how much you are really saving if you are just trying to save money.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro

Trim: SS
by MartinV on 10-16-2012
Its a modern muscle car, keep reading to know what I mean by that
There are a few cars that leave you desiring to own them, very few are (relatively) affordable but this is one of them.

Performance / Fun factor
-Wow this is way above average in terms of power delivery
**However that is not the impressive part.**
-Instead I am more impressed by the way it delivers it, a V8 orchestra sings melodious tunes while you use the throttle, it leaves me wondering why they bothered with the sound system?
-The overall sensation of acceleration is overwhelming in a welcomed way.
-It is fast but feels even faster.

Who would like this car?
-Get this car if you want to have automotive fun and gather everyone's attention at the same time.

Cons
-Power steering feels or is non-existent, get ready to handle the wheel like a trucker.
-Cars in this category have large wheels, good at first but (very) expensive to replace the rubber.
-You want the V8 but that will kill your gas expenses and insurance rate. So you cant really win unless funding is not an issue
-Overall the cost of ownership is not reflected by the purchase price point.
-Head Up Display (HUD) available on some models
-Don't know why they bothered putting back seats in...

Pros
-Low initial cost
-You get to buy a poster car
-You will love to drive this (while the fun factor lasts)

Overall buy this car if you realize the long term financial commitment you are getting yourself into and do realize the fun does wear out a bit.
