A pair of cars that were just revealed earlier last week have already sold. The 2020 Toyota GR Supra and the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 both had their first production model put up for sale over the weekend. And the results are a bit of a shock, with the Supra getting a top bid nearly double what the Mustang brought.
The all-new range-topping sports cars were both unveiled at the 2019 North American International Auto Show last Monday. The Supra with a 335 hp 3.0L inline six and the GT500 with a significantly more stout 5.2L supercharged V8 putting out somewhere north of 700 hp. But while the Mustang might have double the power under the hood, it was the Toyota that took off at Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction.
The first production model of each was put up in separate auctions. Both went to raise funds for charity: the GR Supra for the American Heart Association and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, a charity for veterans and their families. The Mustang Shelby GT500 was sold to benefit JDRF, a charity that funds research into curing type 1 diabetes.
When the hammers fell, the winning bid for the first GT500 Mustang was US$1.1 million ($1.46m CAD). The first Supra, though, was more of a surprise. $2.2 million ($2.9m CAD). A big price for a pair of first-of cars. Though maybe it's because the Supra came with a racing experience, including a chance to drive the pace car and do hot laps with Michael Waltrip, at the Toyota Owners 400 Nascar race in Virginia.
