Porsche has revealed the latest road-going application of its racecar technology, the all-new 911 GT3, powered by a high-revving, naturally-aspirated 4.0L flat-six cylinder engine, good for 500 hp.
That engine comes with the buyer's choice of a standard seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission, or an optional six-speed manual Porsche is making available for drivers it calls 911 "purists." Either drivetrain is bolted into a new lightweight chassis with rear-axle steering.
Porsche says its efforts to cut out the fat have resulted in a power-to-weight ratio of 2.9 kg (6.4 pounds) per horsepower, good enough for a 3.2-second zero-to-97 km/h (60 mph) sprint with the PDK, or 3.8 seconds with the manual, on the way to a 319 km/h (198 mph) top speed.
Porsche says the rear-axle steering can turn the rear wheels the same direction as the fronts, or the other way, depending on road speed, and it works with dynamic engine mounts and a locking differential to enhance the car's high-speed handling dynamics.
Visually, the carbon fibre rear spoiler "reinforces the fact that the design of the car is driven by aerodynamics," while the front fascia and spoiler are there to optimize airflow.
Inside, the 911 GT3 pips its steering wheel from the 2015 918 Spyder, and the electric seats sport bold bolsters for lateral support. Seat options include an 18-way electric adjustment with electric steering column adjustment and memory, and if that's too posh, there are also height-adjustable buckets with a fixed backrest. Like other 911 GT variants, the tiny back seat is left out to save weight.
Other standard kit includes Porsche Communication Management navigation and infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and the Porsche Track Precision App, which lets the driver record driving data on a smartphone for later analysis and bragging rights.
In Canada, 911 GT3 pricing starts at $163,300, with the first examples set to reach dealerships in the third quarter of 2017.
