Subaru Recalls Emissions Control Component That Could Catch Fire

Subaru and Transport Canada have recalled more than 15,000 vehicles to replace an electrical relay that could cause an emissions control component to overheat, melt and catch fire.

In Forester (2009-2013), Impreza and WRX (2008-2014) and Legacy and Outback models (2007-2009), the faulty relay controls the operation of an air injection pump, which helps clean up an engine's exhaust emissions after a cold start. That relay is supposed to turn the pump on and off as necessary, but instead may run the pump constantly, which could cause it to overheat and lead to fire.

Thankfully, the fix is simple enough: Subaru is asking its dealers to replace the bad relays with a revised part.
